The Rise in Coffee Prices – and What Lavazza Has to Say About It
13.07.2025StandardPrva has been managing the books for a large number of cafés and restaurants for years. So it's no surprise that topics about coffee prices are always present among hospitality workers and guests, especially when new waves of price increases occur. A recent statement by the director of the Lavazza company has only further stirred emotions in this sector.
Namely, according to an article from a reputable British daily, the head of the Lavazza coffee company blamed hedge funds and other financial speculators for an 80% rise in coffee prices over the past four years. He states that this staggering change is mostly the result of market speculation, and not just traditional supply and demand factors.
As the article further states, coffee prices on global exchanges have risen again this week after former U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to impose 50% tariffs on Brazil, the world's largest producer of Arabica coffee. These external disruptions, together with the financial maneuvers of large funds, directly affect small hospitality businesses, as well as every guest who enjoys their morning cup of coffee.
In everyday conversations with clients, our accountants at StandardPrva often hear the same comments: “Coffee has gone up again!”, “Will a cup cost more than 3 marks?”, “Will our guests start coming less because of the prices?”. All of this shows how coffee is more than just a beverage – it’s a barometer of sentiment, an economic topic, and a daily inspiration for conversation.
Therefore, following global trends and local practices, StandardPrva always recommends its clients to manage costs rationally, but also to communicate transparently with their guests: because coffee is not just a bill, but also a tradition, a habit, and – perhaps most importantly – a reason to socialize.
