AK Stevanović Investigates: FIFA Under Investigation Over 2026 World Cup Ticket Pricing

08.06.2026

As the attention of millions of football fans around the world turns toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA is facing a serious legal challenge in the United States. Attorneys General from the states of New York and New Jersey have launched an official investigation and issued a subpoena to FIFA regarding the sale of tickets for matches to be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, including the tournament’s grand final.

According to U.S. authorities, numerous fans reported experiencing sudden and often difficult-to-explain price increases while purchasing tickets, as well as changes to seat locations compared to what had originally been presented to them at the time of purchase. Investigators are paying particular attention to the so-called “dynamic pricing” system, a model that allows ticket prices to rise based on market demand.

Prosecutors allege that there are indications that a certain number of tickets may have been intentionally withheld from sale in order to create the impression of limited availability and thereby drive up the prices of the remaining tickets. If proven, such practices could constitute a violation of consumer protection laws.

Additional controversy has arisen from reports that certain seating categories were changed during the sales process, resulting in some customers receiving less desirable seats than those they believed they had purchased. Authorities in New York and New Jersey emphasize that fans have the right to receive exactly what was advertised and paid for.

This is not the only challenge FIFA faces ahead of the tournament. In recent weeks, the organization has come under criticism for record-high ticket prices, while some media outlets have reported technical issues within the ticketing system and the subsequent cancellation of a number of reservations.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the largest in football history, featuring 48 national teams and more than 100 matches across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Given the enormous public interest, the results of this investigation are expected to have a significant impact not only on FIFA but also on the future sale of tickets for major sporting events worldwide.

The message behind this case is straightforward: even the world’s largest organizations must respect the principles of transparency, fair market practices, and consumer protection. When millions of fans and billions of dollars in revenue are involved, public trust becomes just as important as the sporting spectacle itself.
