From the MilošMasterclass edition: Why do business people use imagination less?
11.03.2026At a certain point in life, almost all people stop believing in something that felt completely natural in childhood — the power of imagination. As children, we imagine worlds, build ideas without limits, and believe that almost anything is possible. However, as we grow older, society, formal education, and everyday responsibilities often teach us to be “realistic,” “pragmatic,” and “careful.”
Unfortunately, this is exactly the moment when many people begin to lose one of the most important abilities a human being has — the ability to imagine what does not yet exist.
The great scientist Albert Einstein once said: “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Imagination is more important than knowledge because knowledge describes what already exists, while imagination opens the door to what has yet to be created.
In the world of business this is especially visible. Many business people operate strictly within the frameworks they already know: markets that already exist, models that have already been proven, and rules set by others. They analyze, calculate, and optimize — but rarely imagine.
And this is exactly where the difference between an average manager and a great visionary appears.
Every great company, every innovation, and every major business project began as an idea in someone’s imagination. Before there was a factory, an airplane, a digital network, or a new financial model — there was an image in someone’s mind.
If we look at the history of business, we will see that the greatest breakthroughs occurred precisely when people allowed themselves to think beyond existing limits. They did not ask only “what is possible today,” but above all “what might be possible tomorrow.”
In many philosophical and spiritual traditions there is discussion about universal laws that govern the world. One of those laws is the law of imagination. The idea is simple: everything that exists in reality must first exist in thought.
Cities, bridges, companies, works of art, and even entire civilizations — everything began as a mental image.
That is why the paradox of modern business is that many people with great experience and knowledge actually use less imagination than children. They believe only in what they already see, while visionaries also believe in what has yet to emerge.
In the business world of the future, those who succeed will not only be those who possess information, but those who have the courage to imagine new possibilities.
Imagination is not an escape from reality.
Imagination is the beginning of creating a new reality.
